Mini Facelift vs. S-Lift: What’s the Difference?

If you’ve started noticing jowls, sagging along your jawline, or early facial aging, you may be considering surgical facelift options. At Idaho Eyelid & Facial Plastic Surgery, we offer facial rejuvenation procedures that restore a naturally refreshed appearance while preserving your unique facial features. Understanding the differences between these surgical procedures can help you make a more informed decision during your consultation.
What is a Mini Facelift/S-Lift?
The mini facelift is a term that is often used to describe a surgical facial rejuvenation procedure that is less invasive than a deep plane facelift, yet as effective. At Idaho Eyelid and Facial Plastic Surgery, we utilize a short-incision technique (s-lift) to access the deeper layer of muscle and tissue under the skin. This deep layer is know as the Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System (SMAS), and our SMAS approach provides a safer method to smooth the jawline, reduce the jowls, and create a natural and more youthful appearance.
What makes the S-Lift unique isn’t simply where the incision is placed; it’s how the procedure is designed to lift and reposition the lower face with minimal disruption to surrounding tissue. An S-shaped incision is placed around the front of the ear, which provides access to the underlying facial tissues while keeping the incision relatively small and discreet. We target facial sagging by tightening the SMAS without cutting into it. This process avoids potentially cutting the nerve.
This approach is often well suited for patients who want to address early jowling and loss of jawline definition while avoiding more extensive and potentially risky surgeries.
What About the Neck?
Because the mini facelift incision is placed behind the ear, it allows the surgeon to slightly pull back and smooth loose skin under the chin and upper neck. However, patients with more extensive neck skin/fat concerns may require more extensive procedures. At Idaho eyelid, and facial plastic surgery, we perform platysmaplasty, a procedure that tightens the platysma muscle in order to reduce vertical neck bands and sharpens the jawline. We also perform neck liposuction to remove fat.
Why the Right Facelift Technique Matters
A facelift is designed to address signs of facial aging; however, the most appropriate technique depends on each patient’s facial anatomy, skin quality, and aesthetic goals. A thorough evaluation allows the surgeon to determine which approach is best suited to achieve natural-looking improvement.
At Idaho Eyelid & Facial Plastic Surgery, our surgeons take a personalized approach to treatment planning, recommending the surgical technique that best complements each patient’s facial structure rather than relying on a single procedure for everyone.
