Aging can cause loss of skin elasticity, decline in muscle tone, formation of excess fat, and development of wrinkles. These issues can manifest in a number of areas of the body, including the neck. Patients whose necks are showing signs of the aging process may benefit from a cosmetic plastic-surgery procedure called a neck lift. This surgical contouring method offers a way to make one’s neck look more youthful and rejuvenated. Neck lift surgery is a viable option if you have developed jowls, a turkey wattle, a double chin, or wrinkles and sagging in the neck.
Benefits of a Necklift
A neck lift can improve the appearance of your jawline/neck in a number of ways:
- It can tighten the drooping skin of the neck for a younger look.
- It can contour away excess neck fat for an overall slimmer appearance, eliminating a double chin.
- It can sculpt the neck to take away the appearance of a turkey wattle (a dangling section of sagging muscle and skin tissue)
Techniques Used During Necklifts
A neck lift involves a number of surgical techniques, any of which may be used depending on the requirements of each case.
Cervicoplasty: Removal and tightening of excess sagging neck skin. This involves the use of a scalpel to trim away the tissue.
Platysmaplasty: Removal and tightening of sagging platysmal muscle tissue. The platysmal muscles are large sheets of muscle stretching from the chin down to the chest. When they sag, it can lead to prominent neck bands and a turkey-wattle appearance. Internal sutures are used to tighten the platysmal muscles, restoring a youthful look.
Liposuction: Removal of stubborn excess fatty tissue from the neck. This process involves use of a tool called a cannula, which is a thin tube used to loosen fatty tissue and remove it from the body via medical suction.
During your consultation, Dr. Boerner will perform a physical evaluation and discuss your needs and goals with you. In this way, he can choose the appropriate techniques for your case, implement a custom-designed approach, and deliver natural-looking results.
The Necklift Procedure
Neck lift surgery can take anywhere from two to four hours depending on the amount of tissue removed and the techniques involved. It begins with administration of local anaesthesia with sedation or general anaesthesia.
After this has taken effect, small incisions are made behind the ears and/or beneath the chin. The chosen surgical techniques are employed, and then the incisions are closed with stitches.
The Recovery Process
Following Dr. Boerner’s post-surgical care instructions is the best way to ensure a quick recovery after your neck lift and to minimize the chance of complications.
Once you return home after the procedure, you will need time to heal. The healing process involves taking time off from work, avoiding strenuous physical activities for several weeks, and taking prescribed pain-control medication as necessary.
There will be a degree of bruising and swelling in your neck for a time. These issues will fade with the help of cold compresses.
Necklift Cost and Financing
The cost of a neck lift varies depending on the exact details of the procedure, including the time it takes to perform the surgery and the type of anaesthesia used. Financing options may be available to help accommodate patients’ pricing needs.

“In November 2019, I had a neck/face lift surgery at Idaho Eyelid and Facial Plastic Surgery. My experience was fantastic. Two points I would like to make. First, the teamwork between Dr. Boerner and Heather Anderson, his surgical assistant, was very complimentary. They worked well together and Heather was always available to answer my questions and concerns. Secondly, Dr. Boerner does amazing work and was very thoughtful and meticulous in his execution. Most importantly, my surgical result is very natural… that was my priority. Also, Heather took great care in making sure the healing process was as easy as it could be, through recommending arnica and other products to reduce bruising. Highly recommend this office, and happy to make referrals through town!”
