A neck lift is a surgical procedure designed to address visible signs of aging in the jawline and submental areas, beneath the chin and lower jaw. Our oculofacial plastic surgeons perform this procedure to reduce vertical banding, remove excess skin, and tighten the underlying platysma muscles.
While a standard neck lift addresses tightening of the skin, we can also perform a more advanced technique that involves going beyond the platysma muscle to recontour deeper neck layers. This deep-plane neck lift can result in more significant rejuvenation: the surgical tightening of the neck bands can produce a firmer, more defined contour that restores balance to your lower facial profile without necessitating a full face lift.

The Necklift Procedure
Neck lift surgery can take anywhere from 2-4 hours, depending on the amount of tissue removed and the techniques used. While a limited neck lift focusing on minor skin excision can often be performed under local anesthesia, a deep plane neck lift involves tightening the platysma muscles and deeper tissue layers, which requires conscious sedation. During the surgery, incisions are made to access the platysma, tighten loose muscles, and remove excess fat and skin.
This surgery is often combined with a facelift, providing a more comprehensive approach to improving jawline contours and achieving optimal face and neck rejuvenation. After the deep structures are secured and the skin is expertly redraped, the incisions are closed with sutures.
The Recovery Process
Following post-surgical care instructions is the best way to ensure a quick recovery after your neck lift and to minimize the chance of complications.
Once you return home after the procedure, you will need time to heal. The healing process involves taking time off from work, avoiding strenuous physical activities for several weeks, and taking prescribed pain-control medication as necessary.
